Kyoko Ikeda’s work has been consistent since the start of her career, with motifs of intricate structures floating in the air, which are delicate and instantly recognizable in their individuality. Accompanied by her father—an official of the Ministry of Construction, who was involved in public infrastructure—she was fascinated by monumental structures and the construction process from an early age.
In her twenties she was obsessed with a significant project for the construction of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building which, at the time, was architect Kenzo Tange’s masterpiece, and she visited the construction site daily to make sketches.
Many people may feel a similar sense of fear and awe when confronted with skyscrapers, bridges, pyramids, and other massive structures that they cannot believe were created by human power. She is fascinated by such sensations and tries to represent them on canvas. All along, it has been a strong motivation for creation throughout her career.
