Masae Matsumaru’s painting process seems quite simple - she drops acrylic paints on canvas and stretches it with a squeegee. It looks like she’s simply playing with the medium, but she is meticulously calculating where the colours and lines go exactly on the canvas, with her own grid system.
She says she reels in the disappearing image with the repetition of affirmation and negation, artifice and randomness. After the process, the layers of paint manifest a piece of memory that could have been a fleeting sight and would normally have been forgotten. Her work, that embodies abstract themes and style, surprisingly kindles concrete images in us.
