Takashi Matsuhashi’s position may be peculiar when we try to grasp where he fits into the diverse genres of art. He holds a master’s degree in Japanese painting from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. This school, which requires precise drawing and painting skills and is known for the difficulty of passing, was the first national art school established in Japan. The Japanese Painting Department, where he studied, is different from other art schools, especially compared to the current western art education, because the department plays a critical role in carrying on the traditional techniques and materials. When we assume the standard of value is high technique and beauty, his paintings might belong to the genre of traditional crafts, but his works do not inherit the traditional style, and he has established his unique world of abstract expression.
The materials he uses include pigments, animal glue, Gofun(whitewash)
, gold and silver leaf. The roughness of the pigment particles varies with the brightness of the paintings. He carefully chooses the color and pigment particles according to his experience and intuition.
The three-dimensional composition of his paintings is characteristic of his work, taking into account not only color and line but also the density of the particles and the roughness in the painting.
